RAPID ASSAULT TACTICS

Rapid Assault Tactics were born out of need. Sifu Paul Vunak was asked by the US Navy if he could teach the Elite Navy S.E.A.L. Team Six a method of unarmed combat that they could use when wearing their assault gear. Faced with this dilemma he set to and came up with a "system" that incorporated elements of JKD, Kali, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Savate, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and Kino mu tai all of which came from either Bruce Lee, Dan Inosanto or his own 20 plus years experience of training under the worlds elite martial arts instructors and more than a few street "altercations".

In Paul's own words...........
"I was sitting at home when I heard a knock on the door and three guys walked in decked out with a military vibe, I didn't know what was goin on. I thought, what did I do now??" They said " we represent SEAL Team Six we'd like to talk to you" from there I said "fellas I dont know if the military is right for me, I like to fight, I drink a lot and I'm not gonna pass any piss tests!" They kinda laughed and said "we know exactly what you do and if we wanted Pat Boone we would have hired Chuck Norris!" "So from then on out they moved me to Virginia and I had a contract with them for four years"

Rapid Assault Tactics is known as one of the most efficient and direct systems for defence around and is taught to many organisations throughout USA including SEAL's, FBI, CIA, DEA, the Department of Defense and many law enforcement agencies and SWAT Teams.

There are many and varied martial arts styles out there today, some traditional, some are technique driven, some aimed at the sporting arena whilst others take a more conceptual approach.
Rapid Assault Tactics was developed by Si-Gung Paul Vunak for use by US Government Special Forces SEAL Team Six. Since its inception in the mid eighties it has been used by many Government and Law Enforcement Agencies.

You may have seen a more theatrical version of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Kali being used to great effect in movies such as The Book of Eli and the Jason Bourne series. Off screen Bruce Lee had not only a philosophical viewpoint but a conceptual one too, the concept of intercepting an opponent on the first motion being the very name of his art Jeet Kune Do or Intercepting Fist Way! Interception is one of many concepts or ideals employed in JKD in conjunction with its philosophy and attributes. The Filipino art of Kali has its own concepts, some shared with JKD others peculiar to that art.

Looking for similarities in the way others approach martial art would help in discovering the "essence" of those particular branches of martial art.

Intercepting would take away the necessity of waiting to see which technique was to be used in a confrontational attack and then having to pick out the correct (sometimes a choice of many) response.
The Rapid Assault Tactics civillian training program has been adapted to enable normal men and women to learn to protect themselves in the shortest possible time. R.A.T is a fighting system focused on teaching you to protect yourself and the people you love.

Rapid Assault Tactics is NOT a traditional martial arts class.  A traditional martial arts class is in many cases not a realistic fighting method for the modern world self defence. Rapid Assault Tactics is a hand-to-hand fighting system that was developed for and taught to members of the US Navy SEAL Teams.

Rapid Assault Tactics work with concepts from both JKD and Filipino Kali.
The basis of this system is to teach how to bypass an assailants attack and end any altercation in a precise and combative way. The RAT is based on realistic defence methods. These methods are streamlined in order to be taught in a short amount of time and still maintain complete effectiveness. The system is guided by one principle; surviving an attack situation through the use of effective and functional combative means that can be taught efficiently and quickly.

This 12 hour crash course was originally designed for elite military units like the Navy SEALs and has since been taught to the US military, Federal agencies such as the FBI and CIA, and multiple law enforcement agencies. RAT is a tactical system of dealing with aggression by focusing on destroying or intercepting an attack, applying forward pressure to enter and keep the opponent off-balance, and if necessary, terminating the attack using brutal head-butts, knees, and elbow strikes.

My instructor was a certified Rapid Assaults Tactics Instructor as well as a Full Instructor in Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts by RAT System founder Si-Gung Paul Vunak and has been a student of martial arts for over 45 years. The instructor was very knowledgeable about the martial arts and made a great source of information. His way of instructing was quite different to that of other instructors and the information that he presented was well in-depth and of very high quality.

The RAT Instructor course that I completed allowed me to teach and run the RAT crash course, and run RAT Self Defence Courses. After completing this course I learnt many techniques and tactics drawn from Jun Fan Gung Fu, Kali, and Muay Thai in order to counter violent assaults. The RAT system is the same Crash Course presented to law enforcement & military groups.

The course looked at the 2 main sections of the RAT system including ‘The Game Plan’ and ‘The Complete Fighter’.

Section 1: The Game Plan

In Section 1 we drilled Destructions, Interceptions, Blasting & Trapping: We covered how to deal with various unarmed attacks, utilizing destructions drawn from the Filipino dirty boxing art of Panantuken, and Interception, drawn from Jun Fan Gung Fu. After a brief lunch break, entering and applying forward pressure to an attacker was taught, using the Straight Blast, and dealing with obstacles using trapping.

Section 2: The Complete Fighter

In Section 2 we drilled more advanced techniques from Section 1 as well as Terminating the assailant. I was assessed on utilizing the Muay Thai clinch to control an adversary and to terminate him using devastating close range strikes of head-butts, knees, and elbows as well as rolling the head, takedowns and destroying the attackers centre of gravity. After lunch we looked at Filipino & JKD based releases and defences against pushes, strangles and clothing grabs, and ground releases.

The final part of the session assessed teaching and instructing abilities on all elements of the RAT Course. Overall this was a great course with lots of photos and video taken, and it was a very worthwhile intensive training weekend.

In conclusion, the RAT system is a very aggressive, 'in your face' continuous attack methods utilising multiple systems. After training and certifying in the RAT methods I have eclectically adapted it to fit into the Eclectic Self Protection syllabus, and made it even more biomechanically efficient in line with correct sports science. For example, the RAT methods of entry have been eliminated in line with Lee Morison’s theory, and ESP instead encourage students & practitioners to strike pre-emptively off Dave Turton’s / Geoff Thompson’s adapted fence concepts using ‘adaptation, application & creation’ from a talking range of two feet or less and then close into a Thai boxing neck clinch and make use of the finishing tools that are considered to be the most destructive weapons on the body including head-butts, knees and elbows. In addition, we have adapted the World Sakiado Association’s one-step and two-step linear sparring and free-fighting with the RAT method taking the interception with the fence and continuously striking pre-emptively against all sections of the attackers body, following up with sweeps and takedowns, and immobilizing the assailant with oriental joint locks (standing or on the ground) for a devastating effect.

A big thanks to the RAT Team!

What is Self Defence?
In essence, self-defence is about survival and our own natural instinct to stay alive and intact when attacked, and therefore indicates we want to do more damage to our assailant than they do to us.
